We all know that self hypnosis comes about through a self-induced hypnotic state, which achieves contact with the subconscious mind by means of self suggestion. The need to attain this state is of utmost importance, since through it many psychological problems can be tapped and corrected. The self-hypnotic induction of positive suggestions to the subconscious mind washes away the frustrations that are centered there, and replaces them with vibrant feelings of self-confidence, courage and self-mastery.

Self hypnosis, through the medium of self suggestion, can relieve the pains and fears of childbirth. It is also useful in many other areas, such as relieving people of such unpleasant habits such as nail biting and smoking, not to mention more major annoyances like insomnia or alcoholism, that, unfortunately, plague such a high percentage of our population today.

Ideas are important, positive ideas or suggestions are more important, but positive suggestions, transferred to the subconscious mind during the self hypnotic state, are most important, since they can sure ills that, otherwise, could neither be solved nor approached without subtle influences of self hypnosis.

There has, up to now, been very little written on the subject of self hypnosis. In fact, it is only in the last ten years or so that it has gained popularity. In the early days of hypnosis, the therapists sought to achieve directly the deep somnambulistic state. Starting with Dr. H. Bernheim (1840-1919), the founder of Nancy School of Hypnotism, who was the preceptor of Sigmund Freud, an exciting new technique was developed. He sought first to arrive at the more superficial layers of cataleptic states before attempting to achieve the ultimate state of hypnosis. Through this process, results were achieved more deliberately, and more effectively than ever before, since, through this procedure, the hypnosis achieved was of deeper quality than known before.

It was from Dr. Bernheim’s experiments that now famous Dr. Emile Coue developed the practice of auto suggestion. His famous words, “Day by day, in every way, I am getting better and better”, have made his name a household word throughout the whole world.

At this point, I think it is necessary to differentiate between self hypnosis and auto suggestion, because they are not at all the same. In self hypnosis, the subjects contacts the subconscious mind, while in auto suggestion, he does not reach the subconscious mind at all. The superiority of self hypnosis to auto suggestion now becomes obvious. The levels of their effect differ considerably; one is superficial, the other is deep.

An average person uses positive language on a daily basis not realizing how closely this is allied to the practice of hypnosis. It is also true that we use auto suggestion in our daily affairs, without being aware of it.

Margarethe De Clermont asked:

Firstly, what is Self-hypnosis?

Self-hypnosis is a process of communicating with oneself, directing one’s own attention in specific ways in order to produce states that are commonly recognised as trance states. Neither sleep nor unconsciousness, hypnosis is a state in which a person has shut out distractions and is free to focus intently on a particular subject, emotion, or memory or goal. The hypnotic state is an optimum state for making changes in your attitude and approach to horse riding.

Why would a horse rider want to change their attitude or approach?

Because her competition nerves are hindering her performance during contests

Because she wants to get rid of the debilitating residual fear after a horse riding accident

Because she wants to get rid of ingrained riding habits that limit her progress

Because she wants to master new riding skills faster

Because she wants to stay motivated to reach her riding goals

Self-hypnosis can be a very powerful tool in the mental skills toolbox of the rider. However, if you think hypnosis is no more than a stage trick or is performed only by charlatans, your doubts will impede any positive results that you may get from a hypnotic session. Therefore, you must be open-minded to some degree to the possibility that you can improve your riding ability through the power of auto-suggestion.

In reality, trance states are nothing special; we go in and out of these states several times during the day. Day dreaming, a well-known trance state, is a form of self-hypnosis. You have hypnotised yourself when you drive to work on auto-pilot. Afterwards you remember little of the journey, but if you suddenly had to react fast to avoid an accident, you would have. You are not asleep during hypnosis. You are aware of every thing that is being said. You can remember everything afterwards.

True, effective self hypnosis should be designed and created by the very person who will ultimately use and benefit from it, incorporating the precise words and phrases that mean the most to that particular person. If someone is willing to take the time and mental discipline necessary to improve their riding ability and awareness of themselves and their horses, with self hypnosis, the results will be extraordinary, positive and lasting.

Hypnosis is simply a state of mind, in much the same way that happiness is a state of mind.

Contrary to what most people believe, the mind under hypnosis is still alert and very much in control. If you cannot hear anything, then you cannot benefit from self-hypnosis. Hypnosis is a state of heightened awareness. You remain fully alert, in fact more alert than usual.

Any one can be hypnotised. In fact, it is often a learned trait. You can teach your body and mind to go into trance, and get better and better at it as you practice self-hypnosis. We are constantly hypnotising ourselves. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy, when we call ourselves names, or put ourselves down and reinforce fears and limitations. It can become a habit and if you do it long enough you will develop a belief that will get the results you fear. Ex:

* Boy, my jumping is getting bad

* I am so bad at setting the horse up for a jump

* I will never jump higher than 90 cm, never

These are auto-suggestions or negative affirmations. More appropriate auto-suggestions to give yourself under self-hypnosis would be:

* My jumping is getting better and better every day

* I am very good at show-jumping, it is easy for me to set up my horse for a jump

* I will easily jump higher than 90cm

…and because the trance state gives you direct access to your unconscious mind, you will embrace these suggestions without reserve and accept them as the pure, unadulterated truth.

Imagine what might happen if you changed the suggestions that you give yourself on a daily basis? If you used the hypnotic trance state to give yourself empowering suggestions to improve your riding, reduce your anxiety about and exponentially increase your self-esteem?

Lyta Humphris asked:

What exactly is self confidence, and can you actually improve it? The dictionary definition is quite simple: “a feeling of trust in one’s abilities, qualities, and judgment.” A positive sense of self confidence is more than just believing in you. Using self confidence techniques means that you will be able to gain respect for yourself and your abilities that allows you to take risks in life and put one foot in front of the other daily. You can build the number of self confidence techniques you can use with hypnotherapy, and by reading self improvement articles and books.

Where Does Self Confidence Fit in Our Lives?

For many, self confidence and self esteem are troublesome adversaries that people feel the need to overcome. Maybe you are one of them. You may wake up everyday convinced that you are going to fail. You may think about your last big test that you didn’t do as well on as you would have liked. Alternatively, you may think of the time you broke the copier at work or other perhaps seemingly trivial events. Many of us base our current state of self esteem on how we performed in the past. The problem with that though is that we tend to focus on what we have done badly in the past, not what we have done well.

However, a lack of self confidence can do more harm than just draining you of your can-do attitude. With low self esteem, you may find yourself giving in to bad habits. You may have trouble losing weight, and you may build phobias around your life and much more. Thus, changing your level of self confidence by applying new techniques will help you in all of the aspects of your life.

What Self Confidence Techniques Can You Apply?

So how do you fix it for yourself? How do you re-build your self confidence to a level that makes you wake up everyday ready to tackle the world? There are many techniques including counseling, self-help books etc. A better, newer and more successful way though is using self confidence techniques that use hypnotherapy. As the name suggests, hypnotherapy uses hypnosis as a therapeutic tool to help you refresh and re-work the attitudes you have about yourself. The goal is to rid your mind of the bad, negative thoughts that you have about your abilities, and thoughts that have been constructed from the negative.

What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of being for a person. It involves a constricted focus and a state of deep relaxation. The focus occurs with the ideas presented by the hypnotist. The goal is to change the state of consciousness so that the left-hand methodical side of the brain is tamed while the creative right-side is brought forward. The goal is to draw out the subconscious to a place where deep rooted behavior can be changed. So that means you will be empowered to apply self confidence techniques and improve your own self esteem. It’s actually an easy and very successful process.

Sayeda Habib asked:

Perhaps there is an inner voice saying that nothing looks good on me or theres no point in even going out. How many times have you thought that perhaps it is time to get serious with your weight loss plans.

The one surefire way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. However, most people find this the most difficult thing to do. It tends to be a struggle with oneself, and people are often disheartened by it; its just too hard. If you are like most people then you probably do want to lose wieght, but would want it to be as painless and as fast as possible. You have tried the different diet tricks but unfortunately not one of them seems to be working for you.

If you have tried all sorts of diet pills and diet programs then it is time to consider another alternative which may just work for you. A better and more effective alternative is hypnosis for weight loss.

Hypnosis is used to help people release themselves of issues and problems that they have been struggling with for some time without much progress. Hypnosis goes directly to the root of the problem, and helps you make changes with ease and comfort. Hypnosis has been used very effectively for weight loss. It is designed for you in mind, helping you create long term results; creating healthy new habits with eating and exercise….naturally. Obesity is on the rise and people are on the lookout for anything that will solve their weight problems, so why not try hypnosis for weight loss?

Hypnosis resembles a deep, relaxing meditation allowing you to access your inner mind. This is where you have your old habits stored, and from there you can create new habits easily whilst being guided on how to do it. The new habits are of your own choosing and you can design them to suit your own needs and lifestyle. Since hypnosis for weight loss makes use of natural ways to slim you down, you need to have a lot of discipline to make the program successful. Availing of hypnosis for weight loss for just one session will not solve your obesity or weight loss problems so do not think of it as a quick fix. Hypnosis for weight loss is actually a long term program that will have very favorable effect if you just follow the procedure.

If you use a hypnosis program for weight loss, such as an audio CD, or perhaps you go to someone to work on the issue, you will find yourself in a deep, relaxed state. In this state, you will be able to visualise yourself thinner, and feel the positive feelings that go with that. The more you visualise and feel it, the more your body will respond naturally. The mind and body are one system; they work together. When the mind thinks in a certain direction, the body responds to get the results. If you want to develop healthy eating habits then you can use hypnosis to help you do this with ease and comfort rather than struggling with yourself on a daily basis.

There are studies that indicate positive results of hypnosis for weight loss programs. By listening to a hypnosis weight loss program everyday you will have the desire to eat healthy, eat the right amount of food that your body requires and ultimately to eat to become fit and healthy. You will be able to implement new exercise habits in the same way; naturally, and with ease and comfort.

If you have tried dieting and various weight loss program, and nothing has worked for you over the long term; it means that your inner thoughts and habits require some focused attention. When you work on the inside, the outside follows naturally. Think about trying hypnosis to release this unwanted weight, change your habits, and create a healthier, happier you for the rest of your life.

Alan Densky asked:

Posthypnotic suggestion, thanks to movies and TV shows, the very word conjures up the impression of a beady-eyed hypno-technician swinging a watch and droning the words, “You are getting sleepy.”

Do a Google search, and you will find millions of web pages focused on the subject, especially weight loss hypnosis. Unfortunately, many websites that sell recorded hypnosis programs for weight loss make wild, unsubstantiated affirmations. I’ve been in professional practice since 1978. So I think that I’m more than competent to set the record straight on weight loss hypnosis.

First of all, hypnotic suggestion is a tool, just like a scalpel is a tool. Just as assorted surgeons have diversified skill levels in the use of a scalpel, varying hypnotists have assorted there are many remarkable forms of hypnosis.

Here are just a couple of the wild suppositions about weight loss hypnosis that I’ve seen on websites, along with the truth of the matter:

“Hypnosis for weight loss will speed up your metabolism.” If you want to know the total truth, the fact of the matter is that weight loss hypnosis can’t directly speed up your metabolism. But it can be very functional at helping to program your subconscious with increased motivation to exercise, and exercise can increase your metabolism. Similarly, hypnotherapy to speed up the metabolism for quick weight loss can be effected by programming the subconscious to motivate the intake of increased amounts of protein, because that intake will step up your metabolic rate.

Posthypnotic suggestion will make you shed some weight. This is false. But weight loss hypnosis can be used to help delete your appetite, so that you eat less, and eating less can help you to drop a few pounds.

The average person’s appetite and urges are caused by two subconscious programs:

A. When you pair eating with any other behavior, the other behavior will trigger cravings for food and a compulsion to eat. This is called a conditioned response. For example, if you eat while you drive, you will automatically get an urge to eat each time you drive your car.

B. When you feel tense, you feel a strong urge to put food into your mouth for relaxation. This is the result of training that you received as an infant. When you got crabby, your mom or dad put a bottle in your mouth. You got distracted, relaxed, and probably fell asleep. Now when you get cranky (anxious or tense), you feel compelled to put something into your mouth for relaxation and pleasure.

C. There is a third unconscious program that is present for some people. It’s called emotional eating. Emotional eating takes place when an individual is motivated to make him or herself fat, because by being fat they will protect themselves in some way.

For example, if a subject got their heart broken in a relationship, their unconscious will usually force them into a behavior that would prevent them from getting their heart broken again. Example: They are motivated to become overweight to keep them out of new relationships, because that will clear out the possibility of another broken heart.

D. I have written several articles on hypnosis for weight loss and compulsive overeating that are available on my website. There are some very effective ways to use hypnotic suggestion to reduce or overcome emotional eating.

So just how can weight loss hypnotherapy fix the above problems? Let’s cover them one at a time.

In paragraph “A” above: Conditioned responses can be “wiped out” easily using a course that I call the “Flash.” The flash trains the unconscious mind to setup a new set of triggers. In the above example, the subject had unconsciously banded together the depiction of food in the hand, with the TV. Each time he / she sat down to watch the TV, the unconscious mind filled in the missing part of the depiction: It “Flashed” the image of the food in the hand, and the subject felt an urge, and a craving to eat.

The Flash is a mode of operation we use to program the subconscious to use the visualization of the TV as a trigger for an impression of yourself watching TV without eating. When we lose the depiction of the food, we lose the cravings.

When we momentarily disassociate (see ourselves from the point of view that another person would), we are not able to sense our feelings (cravings and urges).

When we see ourselves in an activity (watching TV without eating), we feel a strong compulsion to generate that behavior. So the subject loses the cravings, and actually gets a compulsion to reject food.

In paragraph “B” above: The subject is eating and drinking for relaxation and pleasure. We teach the subject self-hypnosis for weight loss, because the very essence of the hypnotic state is deep relaxation.

And we utilize the “Flash” to program the unconscious to use the mental pictures that are triggering feelings of annoyance and aggravation, as triggers for secondary mental images and thoughts that will trigger feelings of relaxation. When the subject feels more relaxed overall, oral urges are greatly diminished.

In paragraph “C” above: We discussed emotional eating which makes the person overweight. The “behavior” of being overweight then provides some sort of emotional protection. So we use a mode of operation called an NLP Six-Step Reframe for weight loss, which programs the unconscious to be responsible for making the subject automatically substitute some other larger acceptable behavior that will provide the same emotional protection, in place of being overweight. And that reframe will delete the craving to eat for emotional purposes.

Self-hypnosis for weight loss can be a very powerful method. I can only uncover the tip of the iceberg in this short characterization. Please see my website for larger comprehensive articles and information.
